Originating in the valleys of the mountainous Manipur
region of North Eastern India, Thang-Ta:
The Art of the Sword and Spear, is a traditional martial
arts form. Part of the great heroic tradition of the
region, it integrates various external weapons the sword,
spear, dagger, shield and axe, with the internal practice
of physical control through soft movements coordinated
with the rhythms of breathing, meditation and rituals.
The warming up exercises of Thang-Ta and the vigorous
movements of the form have made the art, in recent times,
popular with fitness enthusiasts. Practice of this form
is said to improve agility, concentration and memory.
Pung Cholom is a dynamic dance
form performed by men, characterized by energetic drumming,
accompanied by complex rhythms and cross rhythms, jumps
and leaps. Dhol Cholom forms an essential part of the
festivals in Manipur. Come along lo see and learn from
the artists of the J.N. Manipur Dance Academy, who bring
you their talents fresh from India. Also see their daily
show at the George Square Theatre, Aug 5-11 at 14:45-15:45,
